How to Choose a Digital Marketing Agency in Chennai: 9 Questions

The best way to choose a digital marketing agency in Chennai is to ask direct questions before you sign and judge the answers, not the sales pitch. Who owns the ad accounts, how results are tracked, who actually runs your campaigns, what it costs and how you can leave tell you far more than a portfolio of logos. A good agency answers all of these clearly and in writing.

Here are the nine questions we would ask if we were hiring an agency ourselves, what a good answer sounds like, and the warning signs to watch for.

Before you start: know what you want

Agencies are easier to judge when you know what you are buying. Are you after enquiries for a clinic in Velachery, admissions for a coaching institute in Anna Nagar, site visits for a real estate project on OMR, or showroom walk-ins for an interiors studio in T. Nagar? Write down the outcome you care about and roughly what a customer is worth to you. Then use the questions below.

The 9 questions to ask

1. Will the ad accounts be in my name, and do I pay the platforms directly?

This is the most important question on the list. Your Google Ads account, Meta Business Manager and ad account, Google Analytics property and Google Tag Manager container should all belong to your business, with the agency given access as a partner or user.

Why it matters

If the agency owns the accounts, your campaign history, audiences and conversion data stay with them when you leave. Starting from scratch means losing months of learning.

Good answer

"Yes. We create them in your name, or work in the ones you already have, and you keep admin access."

Paying the platforms directly

Ad spend should be billed to your own card, so you see the real invoices from Google and Meta. When an agency collects one combined amount for ad spend and its fee, you cannot see how much actually reached the platforms.

Red flag

"We run everything from our agency account and bill you one amount; it's easier." Easier for whom?

2. How will you track results, and how will I know the tracking works?

Clicks and impressions are not results. Results are phone calls, form submissions, WhatsApp chats, bookings and sales.

What to look for

Ask what conversions they will track, how (Google Tag Manager, the Meta pixel and Conversions API, call tracking) and how they will verify it. Good tracking is tested end to end: someone makes a real test enquiry and confirms it appears in the ad account.

Red flag

Reports that only show reach, impressions, clicks and "engagement", with no link to enquiries.

3. What will your reports show, and how often?

What to look for

A short, regular report that answers plain questions: how much was spent, how many enquiries came in, what each enquiry cost, what changed this period and what is planned next. You should also be able to log into your own accounts and check the numbers yourself.

Red flag

Long decks of screenshots and jargon, with no clear statement of cost per enquiry.

4. Who will actually run my account?

Many agencies are sold by a senior person and run by a junior one, or outsourced entirely.

What to ask

"Who will build and manage my campaigns day to day? Can I speak to them directly? How many other accounts do they handle?"

Why it matters

Someone juggling dozens of accounts cannot review your search terms every week or notice when your cost per lead suddenly rises. At AtherFlow we deliberately take a maximum of four clients at a time so the person you speak to is the person running your account.

5. Is your pricing published, and what exactly does it include?

What to look for

Clear pricing, ideally published, with a written list of what is included: setup, tracking, landing pages, ad creatives, number of campaigns, reporting and meetings. Ask whether the fee is a percentage of ad spend or a flat amount. A flat fee removes any incentive to push your budget up.

Our own pricing, for comparison

We publish ours on our pricing page. Meta Ads management is ₹10,000 setup plus ₹15,000 a month; Google Ads management is ₹15,000 setup plus ₹25,000 a month, with a landing page included in setup when needed; both together are ₹20,000 setup plus ₹35,000 a month. A standalone landing page is ₹12,000 one-time and a five-page business website is ₹35,000 one-time. You can compare like with like.

Red flag

"It depends" with no written breakdown, or a quote that changes depending on how much the agency thinks you can pay.

6. What does the contract say about leaving?

What to look for

A short minimum period that gives campaigns time to learn, followed by a simple notice period. Ours is a three-month minimum, then month to month. Check what happens to your accounts, creatives, landing pages and data when you leave. All of it should stay with you.

Red flag

Twelve-month lock-ins, heavy exit fees, or landing pages and websites the agency "owns" and switches off when you leave.

7. Do you guarantee results?

Why this is a red flag

No honest agency can guarantee a number of leads, sales or a specific ranking. Ad platforms run live auctions, competitors change their bids, and your own follow-up affects conversions. An agency promising "100 leads in 30 days" is either guessing or planning to deliver cheap, low-quality leads that technically meet the target.

Good answer

"We cannot guarantee numbers, but here is exactly what we will do, how we will measure it, and when we will review whether it is working." A good agency guarantees its process and its transparency, not your outcomes.

8. Can I verify your past work?

What to look for

Real client names you can look up, real websites you can visit, and ideally a client you can speak to. Be cautious of case studies with impressive percentages but no business name, no timeframe and no way to check.

How we approach it

We only show work we can stand behind. For example, for Raja Sir's Cracking IAS Academy in Chennai we rebuilt the Google Ads account with conversion tracking verified end to end, found that the 20–27 age band converted best, and built a new admissions website. You can see more on our portfolio.

9. How will leads be followed up, and how fast?

This one is partly about the agency and partly about you. The fastest way to waste ad spend is to let enquiries sit. A lead who filled a form at 7pm and hears nothing until the next afternoon has often already called a competitor.

What a good agency does here

It should ask how your team handles enquiries, suggest instant notifications (email, WhatsApp, or a simple sheet), and point out when leads are not being answered. Ads and follow-up together decide your results; an agency that ignores follow-up is only doing half the job.

Putting it together

A quick checklist

  • Ad accounts, analytics and tag manager in your business's name.
  • Ad spend paid directly by you to Google and Meta.
  • Conversion tracking tested end to end.
  • Simple reports showing spend, enquiries and cost per enquiry.
  • You know who runs your account and can speak to them.
  • Written, ideally published, pricing.
  • A short minimum term and a clear exit.
  • No guaranteed numbers.
  • Past work you can verify.
  • A plan for fast lead follow-up.

If an agency is clear on all nine, you have probably found a good partner. If it dodges two or three, keep looking.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a digital marketing agency in Chennai charge?

It varies widely depending on services and how much work is involved. Ask for a written breakdown and compare what is included. Our own fees are published on our pricing page, starting at ₹15,000 a month for Meta Ads management.

Should the agency own my Facebook or Google Ads account?

No. The accounts should be in your business's name with the agency added as a partner. That way your data and history stay with you.

Is a guarantee of leads a good sign?

No. Nobody can control ad auctions or your conversions. Treat guaranteed numbers as a warning sign and ask about process and tracking instead.

What is a reasonable contract length?

A short minimum, such as three months, gives campaigns time to learn. After that, month to month is fair. Avoid long lock-ins with exit fees.

Is a small agency better than a large one?

Not automatically. What matters is who runs your account, how many accounts they handle and how clearly they answer these questions.
