Meta Ads vs Google Ads: Which to Start With in Chennai?

Start with Google Ads if people already search for what you sell, such as "skin clinic Anna Nagar" or "interior designers OMR", because you reach them at the moment they are looking. Start with Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram) if people do not yet search for you but would be interested once they see it, or if your offer sells visually. Many Chennai businesses eventually run both, but starting with one and getting it working properly is usually the better first step.

Below is how to decide, with the trade-offs that matter for local businesses in Chennai and across Tamil Nadu.

The core difference: intent vs interruption

Everything else follows from this one distinction.

Google Ads captures existing demand

Someone types "physiotherapy clinic Velachery" into Google. They have a problem, they are looking for a solution and they are looking now. Google Ads lets you appear in front of that person. You are not creating interest; you are catching interest that already exists. That is why Google leads often feel "warmer": the person came looking.

Meta Ads creates demand

On Instagram or Facebook, nobody is searching for you. They are scrolling through reels and posts, and your ad interrupts them. Meta's strength is that it can show your ad to people likely to be interested, based on their behaviour and profile, before they ever think to search. That makes it powerful for things people did not know they wanted, and for products and services that look good in a photo or video.

What this means in practice

If demand already exists and people search for it, Google is usually the more direct route to enquiries. If demand needs to be created, or if your category has little search volume, Meta is usually where you start. Neither platform is "better"; they do different jobs.

Which industries suit which platform

These are general patterns, not rules. Your own results are what matter, and they can only come from testing with proper tracking.

Usually a better fit for Google Ads first

  • Clinics and healthcare services. Dental, dermatology, physiotherapy and diagnostic centres. People search when they have a need, often with a locality: "dentist T. Nagar".
  • Urgent and local services. Pest control, appliance repair, packers and movers, legal and CA services.
  • Coaching institutes with clear search terms. "UPSC coaching Chennai", "NEET coaching Anna Nagar". Parents and students actively research these.
  • B2B services and suppliers. Buyers search for specific products and services rather than discovering them on Instagram.

Usually a better fit for Meta Ads first

  • Interiors and home décor. A finished modular kitchen or living room sells itself visually. People in new flats along OMR or in Tambaram may not be searching yet, but they respond to a good before-and-after.
  • Real estate project launches. Meta can reach people in the right age and income brackets around specific localities before they start searching for a particular project. Real estate also runs well on Google once buyers are actively searching.
  • Fashion, jewellery, food and lifestyle brands. Visual products that people buy on impulse or inspiration.
  • Events, workshops and new launches. Things with no existing search demand because nobody knows about them yet.

Industries that often need both

Coaching institutes, aesthetic clinics and real estate frequently benefit from both platforms: Google for people actively searching, Meta for building awareness and retargeting people who visited the website but did not enquire.

Budgets: what each platform needs

Neither platform has a fixed price. Both run auctions, and cost depends on competition, targeting and how good your ads are.

Google Ads budgets

On Google you pay per click, and in competitive local categories clicks can be expensive because many businesses want the same searcher. You also need enough budget for the account to gather data on which keywords and areas actually produce enquiries. For the accounts we manage, we recommend a minimum of ₹25,000 a month in ad spend, paid directly to Google.

Meta Ads budgets

Meta is often cheaper per click or per thousand impressions, which makes it accessible at smaller budgets, but cheaper reach does not automatically mean cheaper customers. Meta's delivery system also needs enough results to learn who responds. For accounts we manage, we recommend a minimum of ₹15,000 a month in ad spend, paid directly to Meta.

Do not split a small budget too thinly

If your total budget is modest, putting half on each platform often means neither gets enough data to work well. It is usually better to put the full budget into one platform, get tracking and follow-up right, and add the second once the first is producing reliable results.

Lead quality: why it varies so much

A common complaint we hear is "Meta gives lots of leads but they never pick up the phone." That is real, and it is usually fixable.

Why Google leads often feel warmer

The person searched, read your ad, visited your site and then chose to contact you. That is several deliberate steps, so the people who reach the end tend to be more serious.

Why Meta leads can be weaker, and how to improve them

On Meta, someone can tap an ad and submit a pre-filled form in seconds without fully thinking about it. You can raise lead quality by adding friction in the right places: asking a qualifying question (budget range, locality, timeline), using the "higher intent" form type that asks people to review their details before submitting, and being clear in the ad about price or what happens next. Fewer leads of higher quality are almost always worth more than many leads nobody can convert.

Instant Forms vs WhatsApp vs landing pages

Where you send people after the click matters as much as which platform you choose.

Meta Instant Forms

Instant Forms open inside Facebook or Instagram, so the user never leaves the app. They are quick and convenient, which produces more leads, but also more casual ones. They work best with a qualifying question or two and very fast follow-up, ideally within minutes.

Click-to-WhatsApp ads

For many Chennai businesses, WhatsApp is where customers already prefer to talk. Click-to-WhatsApp ads on Meta open a chat directly with your business. This suits clinics, coaching institutes and interiors firms that can reply promptly. The catch is that someone has to answer quickly and consistently; an unanswered WhatsApp chat is a wasted ad click.

Landing pages

A dedicated landing page works on both platforms and is essential for most Google Ads campaigns. It lets you explain your offer properly, show proof such as photos of completed work, and track conversions cleanly. Landing pages usually produce fewer but more considered enquiries than Instant Forms. If you need one, we build them as a one-time ₹12,000 project; see website and landing page design.

Which to choose

  • Google Ads: a landing page, with click-to-call and WhatsApp buttons on it.
  • Meta Ads with a fast-responding team: WhatsApp or Instant Forms with qualifying questions.
  • Meta Ads for higher-value services: a landing page often filters out casual enquiries.

When to run both

Running both platforms makes sense once one is working and you can see the numbers.

Signs you are ready for both

  • Your first platform has reliable conversion tracking and a steady flow of enquiries.
  • You know roughly what a lead costs you and what share become customers.
  • Your team can handle more enquiries without follow-up slipping.

How the two work together

A common pattern is Google Ads for people actively searching, plus Meta Ads to retarget people who visited your landing page but did not enquire, and to build awareness in your key localities. Someone in Anna Nagar who saw your clinic's Instagram reel last week may be the person who searches your name on Google today.

What it costs to manage both

Our published pricing: Meta Ads management is ₹10,000 setup plus ₹15,000 a month; Google Ads management is ₹15,000 setup plus ₹25,000 a month; both together are ₹20,000 setup plus ₹35,000 a month. Ad spend is always paid directly by you to Meta and Google, never marked up, in ad accounts in your name. There is a three-month minimum, then month to month. More detail is on our Meta Ads management page and Google Ads management page.

Frequently asked questions

Is Meta Ads cheaper than Google Ads?

Meta often has a lower cost per click or per impression, but that does not make each customer cheaper. What matters is the cost per enquiry that actually turns into business, which you can only know with proper tracking.

Which is better for a clinic in Chennai?

Usually Google Ads first, because patients search with a specific need and locality. Meta can then help with awareness and retargeting, and it suits aesthetic and cosmetic services that sell visually.

Which is better for interiors or real estate?

Meta often works well first because these sell visually and buyers can be reached before they start searching. Google adds value once people are actively comparing options.

Should I use Instant Forms or WhatsApp?

Use whichever your team can respond to fastest. WhatsApp suits businesses that already sell through chat; Instant Forms work if you add qualifying questions and call back within minutes.

Can I start with both at once?

You can, but with a limited budget it is usually better to get one platform working properly first, then add the second.
